Matter Studio Gallery hosts an art talk with Sierra Pecheur. The event takes place on November 19, 2023 from 2-4pm in conjunction with the artists current solo exhibition at the gallery. The exhibition runs through December 3, 2023.
Sierra Pecheur Art Talk
I was born in Honolulu, where I learned to swim in the Pacific at age two and my first language was Japanese. My first heartbreak was leaving Komiko and Ryosi, the sister and brother who cared for me and also taught me to speak their language. The war had come to us. Pearl Harbor was bombed and my mother, my brother, and I were evacuated to the east coast, and a very different landscape. The sidewalks and buildings of Manhattan became my first canyons. The powdery dust of South Carolina gave me the weight and wind of tropical storms. At age ten we migrated cross country to California.
I am a sculptor and a painter. My inspirations are the desert, the sea, cloud shadows, the beauty of grasses over battlefields, skulls and bones of large and small prey, the broken hearts and spectacular creativity of human beings, and the lawlessness of space and time. These things move me deeply. The question for me is how do I express this and what do I want to give – what do I want to leave behind?

She has created a place where artists from Southern California can share their work and also their voices. About Karla Funderburk
Funderburk is a ceramic artist as well as a master carpenter. She earned her MFA from Claremont Graduate University in 1984, with a focus on ceramic sculpture, installation and also performance art. In 1991, she started MATTER, a handmade, custom furniture design and manufacturing business. Today she maintains a professional woodshop in addition to a ceramic studio. Here she design and builds custom woodwork along with ceramic pieces. Additionally she teaches classes in ceramics and woodworking.
