November 1, 2025 Art Parties & Events
Draw Them In, Paint Them Out is a must-see show at the Skirball Cultural Center, so be sure to stop by. The exhibition just opened in October, and brings together Philip Guston and Trenton Doyle Hancock. Guston, the child of Jewish immigrants from Odessa, created biting satirical paintings addressing evil and injustice. Hancock, a Houston-based contemporary Black artist, responds with bold works examining identity, otherness, and activism.

Together, their art confronts oppression while revealing humor within darkness. Guston’s Ku Klux Klan paintings appear alongside Hancock’s powerful responses. Through this dialogue, both artists question complicity, institutional power, and the human capacity for transformation. Moreover, they share an embrace of comic-inspired language, turning satire into sharp cultural commentary. Hours: 10am-5pm; Skirball Cultural Center, 2701 N. Sepulveda Blvd., LA, 90049; https://www.skirball.org

Patricia Sweetow Gallery holds an opening reception for two exhibitions. Our Lady of the Bathhouse by John Paul Morabito as well as House of Roses by Jamie Vasta. An art talk with John Paul Morabito and Patricia Sweetow in conjunction with Our Lady of the Bathhouse will precede the opening art party for solo shows. Moreover, there will be an additional art talk with Jamie Vasta later in the month.
Growing up in the Bronx of the immigrant Italian-American community, has clearly influencedJohn Paul Morabito’s work. Our Lady of the Bathhouse features religious tapestries with a subtle but explicit intervention, cloaking 15th- and 16th-century Renaissance paintings of Madonna and Child in flamboyant colors of drag—a Queer allegory turning sacred to Camp. Morabito remediates devotional paintings by artists such as DaVinci and Botticelli with accentuated day-glow colors and a stigmata presentation shimmering with gold beaded fringe. With this joyful celebration of sensorial imaginings, Morabito reframes the historic stigmatization and hypocrisy of the Catholic Church through queer transubstantiation.
House of Roses is a celebration of the shimmering, diverse expressions of queer identity. The composite glitter portraits draw inspiration from the opulence, bearing, and metaphor found in Pre-Raphaelite paintings. Jamie Vasta’s ficitve family are gorgeous, tattooed, costumed, commanding and heralded by community—they refuse the lassitudes of erasure and closeted thinking. As a queer youth growing up in Rochester, New York, Vasta found hope and inspiration in Paris Is Burning—a film that elevates queerness as jubilant, communal, and fierce. Art Talk: 2pm; Art Party: 3-5:30pm; Patricia Sweetow Gallery, 1700 S Santa Fe Ave Ste 351, LA, 90021; https://www.patriciasweetowgallery.com
