The 13th annual Santa Monica Airport Art Walk takes place today from noon to 8pm. All of the studios in Santa Monica Art Studios, and its surrounding artist spaces will be open. In addition, a very special group show opens in Arena 1 Gallery (the main gallery at SMAS). “BETWEEN TWO SEAS / Southern Italy meets Southern California” is the third iteration of exhibitions in an exchange program among Californian, Italian and International Artists. Curated by Carmelo Cipriani (Italy) and Luigia Martelloni (USA), the current exhibition features nine contemporary Italian artists from the MAAAC Museum Cisternino (Apulia).

In the exhibition space the invited artists create a complex chessboard between thought and physicality. They let their works observe each other, creating new semantic routes based on suggestions, similes, contrasts and denials. Art can be a social matter and each work can become a moment to extend memory and weave meditations about today. Nine different ways to proceed in the Art world, nine characters enclosed in a microcosm of peculiar experimentations. Being together, the protagonists become aware of their way of being and feeling. They compose an overview of deep and complex interpretations able to give strength to the evocative part of each work. (Carmelo Cipriani). Artists include: Gianfranco Basso, Luigi Billi, Lisetta Carmi, Giovanni Lamorgese, Ezia Mitolo, Pippo Patruno, Massimo Ruiu, Serena Semeraro, and Alberto Vannetti.

There will be a special presentation later in the day from 6-8pm on March 23. “The unique architecture of Valle d’Itria in Apulia an organic and sustainable example of rural construction,” with Architect Michele Camporeale. Also enjoy Un’ anima in cammino (A walking soul) a documentary directed by Daniele Scalise. Biographical film about the artist and photographer Lisetta Carmi.
