On September 23, 2023, Make Room debuted Sun Woo in In Swamps and Ashes. The solo exhibition runs through October 21, 2023.

In Swamps and Ashes, Sun Woo presents a body of works that address bodily sensations. These often become lost in virtual environments. Technology has changed our daily lives. Therefore much of our activities are experienced through the screen of our devices. As we sit safely inside our rooms viewing images, videos, and other online resources, there is no interaction. Thus, we are less impelled to brush our skin against our surroundings.

Make Room

In her new paintings, Sun Woo reflects on the decrement of tactile, sensory experiences in today’s society. These experiences have become increasingly mediated by technology. The artist incorporates elements that suggest specific physical conditions. The work Brittle Landscape invokes the crispiness of a dry farmland where the hay strands seem liable to crumble upon touch. Dawn in the Grove invites the viewers to imagine a hot metal surface pressed against the body, flattening it out.

Make Room, The Gallery

This is Make Room‘s second gallery space where it joins neighbors Marian Goodman, Jeffrey Deitch, Regen Projects, and the rest of the growing art community in the heart of Hollywood. The new 4500 square foot space gallery opened during Frieze Los Angeles Art Week 2023.

The new building features a wooden bow truss roof, multiple exhibition spaces, and also an outdoor courtyard for gathering. Therfore this will allow the gallery to expand its program and experiment with new kinds of exhibition formats. Make Room prides itself on providing a thoughtful space where a new generation of collectors and institutions are given the opportunity to support the vanguard of contemporary art. The new space will facilitate the gallery’s dynamic program, which includes both solo and group exhibitions as well as an on-site artist residency program.
