Pick of the week features the LA Burning Man Decompression Art & Music Celebration….This is the event for all you chickens who don’t want to deal with the playa dust….and yes that includes me. Mama’s from NYC, no camping for this chick.
This is the closest we can get to Burning Man and still be near running water. So come on out to play and let your hair down. The 10th annual event will be held at LA State Historic Park.
The Decompression is an annual after-event for members of the Burning Man community who gather in the Black Rock Desert of Nevada each Labor Day to make art and burn the effigy of a man. (see below for the recent changes)
It is open to the public, and will run from 1:00 pm until dawn the next day. It features multiple music stages, Burning Man art, and several thousand creative participants.
“Seraphim: The Spirit of Unification” is a wooden sculpture showing four angels guarding a vortex will be the focus of the event. Artists, event participants and community neighbors will be encouraged to write their hopes, dreams, and remembrances on it. (This portion happens Mon-Friday)
Now you may have heard, the LA Decom event was supposed to feature the burning of “Seraphim: The Spirit of Unification.” However the plans to burn the art piece has been postponed following meetings with the Los Angeles Fire Department….imagine that?
Do not fret… “Seraphim: The Spirit of Unification” is already up in the park, so people can add their wishes, thoughts, laments etc. Then it will be taken down and transported it to the Mohave desert, ninety miles outside LA where they will burn it. Now you know that’s just another excuse for a party….right?
Be sure to check LA Art Party’s Wednesday, Thursday, Friday Event Pages for all the different events culminating into one massive burning man 18 hour party!
So head downtown and add your words to “Seraphim: The Spirit of Unification.” Wish for something special, cry for somthing lost, begin again….then enjoy a heck of a party! I’ll see ya down there.
Let me tell you a bit about the artists who created “Seraphim: The Spirit of Unification.” LA-native David “Widget” Wedeen, and main architect says the inspiration for “Seraphim” was drawn from the diversity of the many neighborhoods found within the City of Angels.
The four “Angels” was created by four female artists, each one inspired by her own heritage or current artistic direction. The Asian Angel will be facing East, decorated by black-light artist Debi Cable, who is also the Regional Art Coordinator for LALA. The Latin Angel, facing West, was created by artist and graphic designer Andie Villafane. The north-facing European Angel, by artist and interior designer Scarlet Abbott. And finally the African Angel, facing South, was created by Noelle Charles.
See image to right, Altervison 3D is an interactive blacklight art installation featuring the work of artist Debi Cable.
