From the profoundly mysterious figures emerging from the rocks and pigment of ancient Australian aboriginal art to the ubiquitous emblems of curiosity turned commodity fetish objects in our age of space exploration and consumerism to the subversion of stasis in dominant cultural idioms by humanist science fiction which use the concept of alien being, its likeness, modes of contact and promise of transcendental experience as a vehicle of spiritual catharsis from suffering and human entrapment, the notion of otherworldly visitors reaching our mundane world and earthbound species has permeated the individual and collective imagination across time and place and has been expressed both through vernacular imagery and through idiosyncratic forms of representation.
