François Ghebaly presents Poseuses by Sascha Braunig, as well as Sheer Painer, Joeun Kim Aatchim.

François Ghebaly Sascha Braunig

An opening art party took place on November 18, 2023. However, the exhibitions will run through December 23, 2023.

Poseuses is a solo exhibition by Maine-based artist Sascha Braunig. The artist’s paintings aim to warp, deform, deconstruct, yet also reconfigure hierarchical modes of representation to the point of disorientation. Undulating forms elbow their way to the surface of Braunig’s taut compositions, appearing both frozen and kinetic, occupying multiple temporal and spatial dimensions at once. One senses hidden worlds stirring in the dark pits of Braunig’s cut-out forms, energy lurking in the creases of a skirt, taunting and tracing the perforated edge of a hole.

Joeun Kim Aatchim

Sheer Painer is the newest exhibition by South Korean, Brooklyn-based artist Joeun Kim Aatchim and her first time exhibiting at Ghebaly’s Downtown Los Angeles space.

Artist and poet Joeun Kim Aatchim has long embraced her English second language as a site of invention. Her publications of writing and poetry, including Four of Matresses Stacked on Misery (2017), eye jailed eye (2019) and last year’s In Praise of Cry Breaks 눈물 휴식 예찬 (2016-2022), as well as in her artworks themselves are all influenced. These incidences of miscommunication and neologism become handholds with which to brook and examine the evasive, opaque, or incommunicable.

Sheer Painer, her newest exhibition of paintings and drawings on silk, is no exception. “Painer,” a portmanteau-esque reduction of “painter,” is the artist’s own moniker in her enduring battle with chronic pain that, within the new exhibition, becomes the recurring strain.
