Being Everywhere borrows its title from Maura Smith’s documentary about Schap iro’s career. Accordingly, the phrase reflects the vastness of his archive and his guiding vision. From civil rights protests to Hollywood productions, Schapiro followed American life closely. Likewise, he photographed famous figures and overlooked communities with equal attention. Together, these images create a broad portrait of modern America.
In the early 1960s, Schapiro began working as an independent photographer. He published widely in Life, Time, Newsweek, and other leading magazines. During this era, he documented Southern voter registration campaigns and historic marches. Notably, his photographs from Washington and Selma shaped public memory of the movement. Meanwhile, travel with James Baldwin deepened his emotional and political insight. As a result, his work balances protest, tenderness, and shared humanity.
The Observational Style of Steve Schapiro
During the 1970s and 1980s, Schapiro brought his observational style to film sets. There, he photographed productions like The Godfather and Midnight Cowboy. Similarly, these behind-the-scenes images reveal intimacy, tension, and narrative flow. Across subjects, Schapiro combined clarity with interpretation. Consequently, his photographs act as records and emotional touchstones. They move beyond description and invite empathy, urgency, and reflection.

As David Fahey observes, the work speaks to shared cultural feeling across generations. Therefore, the photographs remain powerful and relevant today. Ultimately, Steve Schapiro: Being Everywhere affirms a life of close looking. It presents an artist who engaged history with care, curiosity, and conviction. Thus, the exhibition frames witness as responsibility and love. Steve Schapiro (1934–2022) lived and worked in New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago. Major institutions, including MoMA, the Smithsonian, and the Getty, hold his work.
