On July 5, 2024…La Luz de Jesus Gallery threw an opening art party to celebrate two new exhibitions – Can Opener by Dave Yoas, as well as Sad Cats and Friends, by Soap.
Dave Yoas and Soap at La Luz de Jesus
Dave Yoas
This is the first solo exhibition of Dave Yoas. The NorCal artist uses recycled tin to create his narrative artwork. Working with vintage tin imagery, Yoas creates slightly cynical, kitsch-inspired narratives about gun culture, sexual mores and also other salient issues. He views his themes through his ironic, Hollywoodized lens and deftly turns the antiquated on its head.

Soap
The second show features a viral artist and model named Soap. The exhibition spotlights paintings of pudgy lonely cats in isolating situations. Sad Cats and Friends are reflections of universal experiences of insecurity as well as alienation from loved ones. Moreover cats are round and fluffy, their cuteness cutting deep as each one is always on the verge of tears.
La Luz de Jesus Gallery
One of the most important, ground-breaking galleries in Los Angeles, which quickly garnered a considerable reputation with collectors, galleries, and artists around the world and gave birth to a genre of California art that would come to be known as Lowbrow.
