The Chapin Summer Festival known for celebrating Guatemalan art and culture abroad takes place today and tomorrow. It is a free event that attracts a multicultural audience from across SoCal. If you haven’t stopped into the Natural History Museum to visit the butterflies…what are you waiting for. It’s fantastic. The Butterfly Pavilion closes tomorrow Sunday, It features hundreds of butterflies, colorful native plants. They literally sit on you, if you let them. Also the natural light is perfect for photos. Torrance Art Museum (TAM) presents the second installment of TRYST, as well as the third edition of an annual pop-up exhibition titled NOMAD. GDCA throws an art party to celebrate two exhibitions titled Luminous & Sondra Jolles: A Life In Layers. Also downtown…Murmurs once again throws an all-encompassing art party to celebrate Willendorf by Ron Athey and Hermes Pittakos. In a two-part performance installation (which also took place last weekend), Athey revisits his 1996 memorial tribute to Leigh Bowery, The Trojan Whore, embodying the pocket size icon, The Venus of Willendorf. Act 2 goes horizontal, conjuring the bejeweled 2nd century martyr St. Hyacinth of Caesarea, reanimated, set in Pittakos’ vitrine of viscera. The Hollywood Bowl presents Pink Martini Featuring China Forbes aka the “little orchestra.” This is the second and final night to catch the show. Helmed by pianist Thomas Lauderdale, this is the band’s 30th anniversary year. The Andrew Bird Trio will kick off the show. In addition to Bird, the band includes Alan Hampton and Ted Poor.
