Art Bug Gallery presents Neo-Chicanonismo in Abstraction, Surrealism, and Latinidad, the second chapter of the LA Futurism – Summer Series, a curatorial journey examining contemporary painting in Los Angeles through Chicano legacy, futurism, and the ever-shifting visual languages of culture, memory, and resistance, reclaiming historically Eurocentric genres—abstraction and surrealism—and reshaping  them through lived experience, cultural memory, and migration.

This exhibition traces the influence of Chicano and Latinx artists on European-rooted movements—abstraction and surrealism—and how those genres have been reworked through migration, hybridity, and lived experience. Here, abstraction is no longer purely formal, and surrealism is no longer solely psychological; both become tools to reflect the layered realities of identity, displacement, and cultural inheritance. Art Party: 2-7pm; RSVP for Art Bug Gallery Free Art Party HERE. Art Bug Gallery, 2441 Hunter Street, Unit B, Los Angeles CA 90023; https://artbug.net/

August 23 2025 Art

Erik Frydenborg, daxk unifonn, 2025, Acrylic on basswood, 38 x 61 x 5 in

Per Roxanne Jackson: “Hi-Dose is an exhibition of psychonauts, witches, and dreamers — artists who vigorously explore the depth of human realities through paint, clay, textiles, crystals, wax, wood, feathers, photography and glitter. With various practices embracing craft, surrealism, abstraction and maximalism, the selected artworks may function as screenshots into portals and hallucinations, glimpses of transcendence and profound changes in perception. In a world obsessed with social media, on the brink of a climate apocalypse and continually overwhelmed by the tragedies of war, these artists go inward. Like the monkey who ate the magic mushroom, heightening human senses and hastening human evolution — we are reminded of the earliest tools that can teach us new truths and lead us into a new way of being. Santa Monica

The Fantasticks continues at Ruskin Group Theatre for a limited run. This enchanting multi-award-winning musical, is still to this day the longest running off Broadway play. This is a wonderful show. I saw it when it when I lived in NYC (a very long time ago). The original off-Broadway production opened in 1960 and ran for 42 years. Although I didn’t catch the original cast (Hey, I’m not that old), I did thoroughly enjoy it.

Director Elina de Santos takes the story into the 21st century, keeping the same wit, sensitivity and beauty of the original story. Furthermore, her staging brings fresh insight with an imaginative flair to a cherished classic. Actors include: Michael D. Cohen, Danny Bernardo, Rhett Hemingway, Kiel Kennedy, Sophie Pollono, Michael Redfield, Raven Scott, John Wuchte, and Silas Shultz. Run time is approximately 120 minutes (including one 10-minute intermission). The show runs through August 24, 2025;

Performance: 8pm; Tickets are $45 (student/senior discounts $30 and also groups 10+ $33) and can be purchased in advance at www.ruskingrouptheatre.com or by calling (310) 397-3244. Free parking available on-site. Ruskin Group Theatre, 3000 Airport Avenue, Santa Monica, CA 90405; https://www.ruskingrouptheatre.com/
