Angélique Glennon Solo Exhibition
The solo exhibition features over ten artworks, part of three collections. The artist has dubbed this original style of jewelry as “Newelry” (Jewelry on paintings).
D’Antan (one of the works featured) an oil painting on wood panel. The Newelry™ (Art Jewelry) holds with custom handmade pillows and wires got through them to hold each piece.
The artwork comes from incidents in the artist’s life. Glennon explains, “They trigger thoughts of making artistic works. They involve people and what they do. That’s why this conceptual jewelry is called “Oui, The People Newelry™” – find out more about the art and also the artist on the website.
Inspiration
When asked what inspired her, Glennon answered, “I was in France in 1992 with my husband visiting my family and the countryside, castles, etc. I jumped over a short stone wall and have a picture of it. Later on (In 2007, it takes time!) when I saw the picture again by chance I thought ‘I don’t have a series like that’ and I got busy finding how to make it. I created it using haute couture sewing skills I have from my mother who was a Haute-Couture Fashion Designer. There is always something impossible about making this jewelry I have to solve. I call it ‘The art that defies the designable.’” She added that it is quite thrilling when she experiences these periods of art making, however fear comes up as well, when she wonders if it’s even possible to be done.
Every work of Newelry art contains 7 pieces of removable conceptual jewelry pieces (necklace, ring, earrings, pin, jewelry pieces and a hair barrette piece, bracelet). They are showcased onto a matching painting created by Glennon as well (oil usually, acrylic sometimes). The entire work is framed into a museum quality plexiglass that has a door sliding to the right to open it. The jewelry items have wearability ratings (see the website) – from very fragile to wearable.
The artist has created three types of series of her Newelry artwork.
1. “an aerial view of human civilization site”
2. “Unusual materials” (used for jewelry),
3. “Hybrids”
History of the Artwork
Glennon began creating the Newelry when she was twenty-four. It was August 1986, in France. “I decided that I was going to be an artist for the rest of my life.” She has created thirty eight different series. However only exhibited paintings during throughout the past twenty years. It was during the pandemic, when the artist experienced a breakthrough about how to display her artwork, which had previously been an issue. She decided to create matching paintings.
