Walter Maciel Gallery debuted Lo Que Queda by Colin Doherty in June 2026. But not to worry if you missed the opening, as it runs through August 21, 2026. The title which means “what remains” or “what is left behind” suggests the unknown. Therefore the exhibition reveals Doherty’s most intimate and emotionally powerful work to date. The artist uses oil paint to create works ranging in scale and atmosphere. Additionally his paintings draw from memory, migration, loss, and belonging. While they examine the complexities of living between two homes, each location carries distinct ideas of family and connection.

The works were created while Doherty was co-existing in two places. He split his time between Costa Rica and the United States. Meanwhile, he balanced life with his daughters and relatives in Lexington, Kentucky. At the same time, he shared daily life with his wife and young son in Costa Rica. Rather than depicting travel itself, the paintings capture constant departure and separation.
The artist utilizes light while painting rich layers of color. Thus viewers discover deeper emotional meanings through sustained observation. What first appears cinematic gradually reveals reflections on longing, absence, and distance.
Before pursuing painting, Doherty worked as a television and film set designer for fifteen years. Born in Atlanta, he earned an English and Creative Writing degree from the University of North Carolina Wilmington. Although self-taught, he fully committed to painting in 2008 following his father’s death. This exhibition marks his third solo presentation with the gallery.
