NoirFest Santa Monica was created by multi-media artist, Helen K. Garber. The Festival started January 14th and will run through March 28th.
NoirFest Santa Monica includes art, film, photography, literature, music and spoken word at various historic venues all over Santa Monica. Every week, there are special Noir events. Stay tuned to LA Art Party…for more details.
Saturday, February 4th, a very special night photography class begins as party of NoirFest Santa Monica.
Join internationally renowned night photographer, Helen K. Garber, as she guides students through the specialized techniques of night photography at the artist’s favorite Los Angeles Landmark – the world famous Santa Monica Pier. (This is the first photography class, taking place on the pier that is sanctioned by the Santa Monica Pier Restoration Corporation.)
The course begins at Otis for an introductory meeting to prepare students for the shoot. The second session meets late in the day, in the private quarters of the Pier Restoration Corporation, the old apartments above the landmark Carousel, a special treat in itself. After a preliminary discussion and a tour with your instructor to point out the best vantage points, students watch and evaluate the available light, to be ready to shoot by sunset.
Shooting continues through dusk and nightfall. Following the shooting session, the students may opt to stay, relax and share a meal with Ms. Garber at one of the restaurants on the pier. The final meeting takes place at Otis for a critique of the students’ photographs.
Cost: $175.00 for non-credit, 3 meeting workshop/2 different sites/Free Parking on site. First class is at Otis College of Art & Design, located at 9045 Lincoln Blvd., LA, then the next two sessions continue at the Santa Monica Pier.
Class schedule is: February 4, 1-4pm Otis Art Institute (Intro); February 7, 4-8pm Santa Monica Pier (Shoot); February, 21, 7-10, Otis Art Institute (Review)

If you would like to see more of Helen K. Garber’s work, be sure to pop in to see this fabulous show at dnj Gallery (J-1) at Bergamot Station, 2525 Michigan Ave in Santa Monica. Open daily from 11:00 am till 6:00 pm.
“Encaustic Noir” is curated by Pamela Schoenberg, and will remain open till February 25th. In Gallery II, a classic tribute to Noir photography by legends such as famed Parisian photographer Brassai and several of his contemporaries will also be on display.
Reminiscent of the cinematic ventures of the 1940s and 1950s, NoirFest Santa Monica proposes to capture noir moments in time. Santa Monica’s ever present mist has inspired both filmmakers and novelists to use the city as a setting in many detective stories. Like a rare black and white image plucked from a film noir or Raymond Chandler novel, NoirFest Santa Monica hopes to rekindle this simple yet striking part of Santa Monica history.
More NoirFest Santa Monica events will be posted on www.laartparty.com.
