Another in Venice…

Sat-Oct10-TrunkGallery-Babak-WaitsTrunk Gallery presents “People of the Babak,” an exhibition of paintings collaboratively created by Los Angeles artists Mitchelito Orquiola and Chalavie (aka Charlotte Vanhaecke).

See image: Babak, Waits

Since a chance encounter a little over a year ago, they have been painting works of vibrant pulsating color and wit. And while the pairing may appear slightly incongruous – Mitchelito, self-taught and from the Philippines; Chalavie, formally trained and from Paris, the work is anything but.

Collaboration in art is nothing new, there was Warhol & Basquiat, Pollack & Krasner, however, to share a canvas and paint over each other’s brush strokes takes collaboration to a whole new level. How does an artist let go of control, let go of ego? Come see for yourself as Mitchelito and Chalavie paint live during the opening reception of “People of the Babak” – the name they have given their creative continuum. The exhibition will also include solo works by each of the artists.

Another one right down the street (in Culver City)…

Sat-Oct-10-LouiseMarlerBruce Lurie hosts a closing reception for artist Louise Marler’s exhibition featuring her “camERA” Lightbox and Mixed Media.

Is it a coincidence that Marler created new “camERA” art series and the “Famous TypOwriters” art is of machines that are owned by Steve Soboroff? Yes, well maybe. Her TypOwriter series has lead to the recent works of art being Orson Welles’ typewriter and Ray Bradbury’s typewriter. The LA Police Body Cams just implemented are a Relevant Coincidence to her art of Vintage Cameras and Typewriters, which are the creative, analog, tools of previous centuries. Both were primary tools of Journalists and Communicators of all sorts. Smart phones and the Internet have replaced both. (The camera collection art was created entirely separate of Mr. Soboroff’s LA Police Commission roll.)

In Looming Atmospheres, it feels like your gaze travels up from earth to sky, not clockwise across a flatness. Though in fixed position, its ever-shifting views evoke the vertigo of an astronaut’s sight of Earth’s curvaceous atmospheric horizon.

KP Projects/MKG is proud to present two solo exhibitions featuring new work from Andrew Hem and Nathan Ota.

Andrew Hem’s latest exhibition “Unknown Terrain” explores wonder, excitement and a sense of adventure as we traverse unfamiliar landscapes, both urban and natural. Figures levitate in snow-laden mountains, stand knee deep among roaring waves, or defy gravity in a fall-kissed wooded forest, seemingly transported instantaneously and calmly unaware of their immediate surroundings.

Nathan Ota’s latest exhibition, “Four Corners,” examines the artist’s studio as a liminal space of intimate personal reflection, as place for both reflection and the visual communication of personal narratives.
