There is an incredible amount of art events tonight…so head out early and let me know how many you hit…Mama is gonna get out there and see how many I can hit.

In Venice…

The work of GeorgSat-Jan10-2015-theBookoftheDaD-Jurie Koll (1941-2013) – hilarious, controversial, insightful drawings and writings – will be shown for the first time in public at the Mike Kelley Gallery at Beyond Baroque beginning on January 10, 2015. George Koll lived an alternative life in the underground of San Francisco, and his writings and art are testimony to his life.

He survived, – sometimes thrived – under the radar and longer than most, if not all, of his friends and contemporaries of the Beat Generation, the 60s, 70s and beyond. Free, but donations always appreciated.

Ruth Bachofner Gallery celebrates artists Trygve Faste (see image) and Trang T. Lê.

Trygve Faste’s new work emerges from a response to prevailing currents in consumer culture, architecture, design and technology. These systems, which shape our physical and psychological environment, are explored by Faste through his own language of abstraction.

The artist constrSat-Jan10-2015-RuthBachofner-TrygveFasteucts and paints three-dimensional works that suggest a unique interface between industry, fine art and technology. These discordant impulses seamlessly merge in his works through conceptual motivations and formal practices.

Trang Lê’s exhibition features a series of paintings titled Threads. As with previoius works in the series, the artist draws upon the combined influences of nature and personal experience in her abstract oil paintings.

ROBERT BERMAN GALLERY presents “Como Fregas | What Now,” a survey of works by East Los Angeles Artist John Valadez.

Dec10-RobertBerman-JohnValadez-LoversCreekValadez is a working muralist who helped bring works documenting the Chicano experience in Los Angeles since the 1970’s. Working in large scale, small scale, in pastels and acrylics, Valadez creates vibrant documentary works compiled from numerous photographs he captured on the streets of East L.A. Illustrating all that may be experienced, whether a brash argument or a hauntingly illuminated storefront, Valadez’s works do anything but shy away from the veracity of life. Como Fregas will exhibit a survey of works from the 1970’s to present, in all mediums, including his documentary photographs from which his inspiration evolves from.

John Valadez returned this fall to Los Angeles from an artist residency at the Museé d’Aquitaine (Bordeaux, France) for the exhibition Chicano Dream – The Collection of Cheech Marin.

Lois Lambert Gallery presents three exhibitions opening tonight…

“Things No One Told You About” features a new series of surreal landscape paintings by Nicole Gordon (see image below).

ESat-Jan10-2015-LoisLambert-NicoleGordonach painting is set in a serene forest landscape that has been overrun by an army of toys and electronic games. The artist sees the forests, painted in cool blues, greens and purples, as a metaphor for “sacred and serene personal space.” The “out-of-place objects” transform the landscapes into absurd and some might consider even disturbing scenes. Gordon paints the objects in bright, saturated colors to emphasize their un-natural state in contrast to the natural tones of the forests.

“Floor Plan for the American Dream,” is a collection of oil paintings on vintage domestic textiles by artist Jane Richlovsky. The open floor plans, patios, and pools of mid-twentieth century Modernist homes once seemed to embody sunny prosperity and limitless freedom.

“The Project Room” at Lois Lambert Gallery you’ll find “Beaded Botany,” a series of twenty-two mixed media photographs by Deanne Belinoff. Taking microscopic images of natural life, such as plants and flowers, Belinoff constructs them into abstract images that resemble small organisms using pen, ink, and collage.

In Beverly Hills…

Gagosian Beverly Hills is pleased to present neSat-Jan10-2015-Gagosian-HarmonyKorinew paintings by Harmony Korine.

Korine’s cult films of the past twenty years—from the surreal Gummo (1997) to Spring Breakers (2012), a contemporary film noir in which four college freshwomen are drawn into a murderous labyrinth of events—merge reality with fiction and hand-held camerawork with precise montage.

This heady mix of the unplanned, the seductive, and the outlandish crystallizes in his lesser known, highly tactile paintings. Eschewing brush and professional paint in favor of Squeegees, leftover household paint, and masking tape, he creates loosely sequential images that echo the sonic and visual leitmotifs of his films. The accumulative hypnotic effect of the paintings is offset by lifelike randomness and impulsive energy.

In Hollywood…

Enjoy the Grand Opening of LAM gallery. The inaugural exhibition will feature new works by artist Monique Prieto.

In “Hat Dance,” Prieto continues a lineSat-Jan10-2015-LAMGallery-MoniquePrieto of inquiry begun in her work in the mid-90’s, redefining the parameters of figurative abstraction and the role of viewer participation in the completion of a painting through a playful narrative minimalism.

Prieto pays homage to the Hat Dance in this exhibiton while using oil paint and ink in swift, frank gestures. Color, line and form assert themselves as analog to the dance’s form and origin. In the india ink on paper pieces, fabric remnants lend themselves as borrowed bits of tattered paint. In this work, Prieto proposes painting as a kind of courtship; between the painter and the painting, and between the painting and the viewer.

Michael Rey, ‘Banilla C’ 2014, Oil on plasticine clay on panel  54 x 40 x 1.5 inches, 137.16 x 101.6 x 3.81 centimeters

Rey’s work has always addressed the mind’s indefatigable action to seek meaning. It has also long addressed the fragility of the human body and the mysteries of an existence over which we have no control. Referring to the scraped layers of Plasticine clay that cover most of his free-standing works (and all of his wall-based works), Rey comments that he wants his artworks to be as fragile as we are: solid yet ephemeral; immediate yet ultimately unknowable.

Sat-Jan10-2015-AnatEbgi-NicholasPilatoAnat Ebgi is pleased to present the first solo exhibition of New York based artist Nicholas Pilato, opening on January 10 and on view through February 21, 2015.
For his solo exhibition, Pilato debuts a series of paintings consisting of concrete and oil paint on canvas. Each work combines gritty textures and a rich color palette evoking nature and organic substances.

The paintings are material compositions, disrupted through varying phases of deterioration, abrasion, and formal displacement. The canvases are scraped and broken down into abstract gestures and diffuse patterning. This excavation creates surfaces of raw texture and color, invoking aspects of sedimentation, erosion and industrial decay.
