March2019-520Size-FrederikaRoeder Calafia edited-1
Frederika Roeder, Calafia, mixed media acrylic, 54″ x 48″ x 1.5″

Roeder’s painting Calafia is from her San Clemente Series…created from Acrylic wash with fluid matte medium, interference, fluorescent (transparent), 18kt gold leaving pen, gold-metallic bronze ink, iridescent (fine), coarse white paste, pearlescent-opaque, fluid acrylic, canvas partially primed with clear gesso.

The artist’s work has been directly affected by her surroundings. As she explains in artist’s statement: “My work is a blend of California Light and Space and Minimalism and reflects a lifetime of living in Southern California and growing up as a part of its iconic surf culture. Using brush and palette knife, I frequently work with materials taken from the surfing industry. Calafia uses warm washes of acrylic stains interspersed with golden edges and splatters of bronze and gold ink – reminiscent of summer sunsets, simmering like thedesert sun reflecting MY San Clemente and the memories that compel me to tell its story today.”

On view now through Saturday, March 23, 2019; The gallery is open THURS – SAT, 1-6PM and by appointment.
