On Saturday, June 24th, Ray Ford and Louise Marler will be featured in a special one-day ONLY exhibition. The event will take place at Marler’s studio/gallery. Marler took notice of Ford’s work and invited Ray Ford to exhibit his sculptures. Feel free to come by after 1pm….we’ll be there early. Ray Ford has spent his life crafting wood sculptures….a meticulous process. Using several different techniques, carving, burning, bleaching, etc., the artist carefully creates delicate one-of-a-kind wooden bowls, plates, goblets, etc. On August 30, 2017, Longtime Venice resident and artist Ray Ford will turn 90. He still creates almost every day. When asked how long one sculpture takes, he replied, “years.” And he’s not kidding…The arduous process of getting the wood ready to carve takes years. He explained that he begins the process on a piece of wood…(turning it on his lathe) then wraps it in a brown paper bag and allows it to dry out for a year – sometimes two depending on the thickness. Then the intricate work begins. He either burns, bleaches or carves a pattern into the non-functional sculptures.

Louise Marler is an accomplished artist. The daughter and granddaughter of typewriter salesmen, repairmen and collectors in St. Louis, Missouri, Louise Anne “LA” Marler has documented and transitioned her family’s nearly 100-year dedication to the typewriter industry into a passionate art form that is sought after by writers and art collectors, and has been a primary force in the resurgence of interest in typewriters.

For this exhibition, she will be exhibiting works from two series – camERAs and KeyWords. A photographic pop artist, Marler incorporates a variety of media into her work such as painting. She is constantly working on multiple series and often goes back and forth between them. She explains, “One idea leads to another and it doesn’t happen in a formal way.”

Marler has shown her art all over the world. Her work has been featured in film and TV shows, such as, Two and a Half Men, Curb Your Enthusiasm, The Mentalist, Criminal Minds, Reba, Bernie Mac, Rules of Engagement, Hawthorne, The Newsroom, A to Z, upcoming in Nickelodeon, Friends with Benefits, and more.

It’s gonna be a fun art party – food and drink will be provided. Meet Ray and Louise and find out more about their art.
