See image: by Amanda Kirkhuf, Hyppolite oil on canvas 61 x 58 “ 2016

Titled “Militant Friction,” this show illuminates themes of militancy and artillery manifested in personal narratives. With reference to such forebears as Caravaggio and Artemisia Gentileschi, Kirkhuff employs humor and quotidian detail while sacralizing marginalized and mythic figures in oil paintings, graphite drawings, and ink works. In Militant Resistance, Kirkhuff creates a visual record of feminist and queer bodies utilizing hate, violence and militarism as tools of resistance.
