Downtown LA…

Join MAMA Gallery for a discussion and closing party of “Mister Lee’s Shangri-La” by Los Angeles artist Lisa Solberg.

“Mister Lee’s Shangri-La” is a sensorial, immersive exotic dance club sheltered inside a lush greenhouse setFri-Jan15-MamaGallery-MisterLees-ShangriLAting that will awaken all of the senses. The exhibition involves a series of choreographed performances by local dancers, under the direction of Solberg, surrounded by her abstract artwork, pink neon lights, beautiful garden surroundings, and a signature scent Solberg created to smell like dirt and money. The exhibit explores the reversal of power between the dancers and the audience.

Friday-Jan15-2016-MachineProjectNow for something totally different…Mystery Theater for Strange Birds features a smorgasbord of uncanny sounds by two exploratory voices, moving in between improvisation and premeditation.

Experimental vocalist Carmina Escobar is a creative performer, interpreter of contemporary music, improviser, sound and intermedia artist from Mexico City. Her work focuses primarily on sound, the voice, the body and their interrelations to physical, social and memory spaces. She has intensely explored the capacities of her voice developing a wide range of vocal techniques that she applies not only to her performance and creative practice but also to investigate radical ideas and concepts regarding the voice.

Ute Wassermann is known as a vocal soloist and composer/performer for her extraordinary, many-voiced and extreme vocal sound-language, which she has brought into experimental/contemporary music in diverse ways. She has developed techniques to “mask” the voice using birdcall-whistles, palate whistles or resonant objects, and designs sound-installations. A particular interest is the development of compositions for spaces with unusual acoustic qualities. She is based in Berlin.
