Hauser Wirth West Hollywood present a new exhibition by Arshile Gorky. Titled Horizon West, the solo show officially opens on February 21, 2026 and runs through April 25, 2026. However on Wednesday, February 25, 2026, the public is invited to an opening art party to celebrate the exhibit.

It was the summer of 1941, Arshile Gorky traveled west with Agnes Magruder and Isamu Noguchi. Together, they drove from New York to Los Angeles in Noguchi’s new station wagon. Notably, this journey marked Gorky’s first visit to California and longest absence from the East Coast. Previously, he had remained near New York since arriving as an Armenian refugee in 1920. Centered on this journey, Horizon West traces Gorky’s evolving landscape vision. Specifically, the exhibition presents works created before, during, and after the trip. Thus, the selection reveals how travel reshaped his approach to place and perception. The exhibition includes previously unseen works.

Additionally, it features paintings from Gorky’s first solo museum exhibition in 1941. Visitors can closely study his shifting responses to American terrain. While Gorky advanced abstraction in twentieth-century American art, he bridged surrealism and emerging abstract expressionism. By synthesizing influences from Picasso, Miró, and de Kooning, he formed a distinct language.

During the 1940s, his creativity intensified through western travel experiences. However, Gorky rejected vast spectacles in favor of intimate, tactile details.
For example, he ignored the Grand Canyon but admired adobe ovens at a Hopi settlement. Likewise, he favored walkable hills over dramatic vistas at Big Sur. After the San Francisco exhibition closed, the couple returned east. Meanwhile, they married in Nevada and honeymooned along the Yuba River. Upon returning to New York, Gorky transformed travel memories into new colors and forms.  He then painted Untitled (Mojave) and completed Garden in Sochi. In later years, Gorky continued drawing from nature for solace and meaning. Ultimately, Horizon West reveals how travel reshaped his inner and visual landscapes.
