Control Gallery Shaniqwa Jarvis & Othelo Gervacio

The artist’s new body of work diverges from the usual emotional portraiture of Shaniqwa Jarvis. The work encompasses medium and large format photographs. This exhibit marks her expansion into painted textiles and collages.

A mutated evolution of Othelo Gervacio’s signature style, Mind Flowers finds inspiration from 17th Century Dutch Master painting. These works often portrayed flowers as main subjects, floating between metaphors of relationships and scientific realism. In addition these artworks crossed over with ‘70s psychedelic aesthetics and ideology.

About Shaniqwa Jarvis

Shaniqwa Jarvis is an artist known for combining a modern fashion aesthetic with sensitive as well as emotional portraiture. She captures vivid reality across a wide variety of subjects that always appear to be an extension of herself in images that speak to raw, disparate feelings imbued with a deep sparkling optimism. Jarvis has executed large scale portrait projects and exhibits in London, Tokyo, Los Angeles and New York. She co-created Social Studies, an experiential retail pop-up focusing on connecting the youth to creators through curated programming. She has released a range of creative products with companies like adidas, The Standard Hotels Group, SNS and Supreme, as well as her book, Shaniqwa Jarvis, that delves into Jarvis’ archive of photography and combines editorial and personal work spanning two decades. www.shaniqwajarvis.com

About Othelo Gervacio

Othelo Gervacio is a painter based in Brooklyn, New York, whose work explores ephemeral beauty within the subtle nuances of human relationships. His practice draws from a wide spectrum of techniques and inspiration: from the effervescence of raw and naive carved scrawls found on street benches, to watercolor flash created at the obscure corners of tattoo culture, to the fine details of hyper-realistic Dutch Golden Age paintings. This versatility isn’t contradictory but encompassing as it reveals the common goal of counterculture youth and traditional oldmasters altogether, which is the desire to commemorate our feelings and see how they stand the test of time. By presenting the fracture between, for instance, a cherished moment and the broken promise of a future relationship, between memory and oblivion, or between the celebration of life and the temptation of destruction, Gervacio addresses the dramatic tensions in our lives. http://othelogervacio.com
