While Thursday, Friday August 14-15 2025 art parties may be a bit slow due to Labor Day, we still have plenty of fun events. In addition to a guided art tour, opening receptions, you can also enjoy a poetry event, a screening, live music, wine tasting, theatre and also comedy. It’s a great way to kick off the holiday weekend.

In Westwood…Join Gassia Armenian for a guided tour of Intersections: World Arts, Local Lives, the Fowler’s permanent collection installation. Explore how art from Africa, Asia, the Pacific, as well as the Americas reveals shared themes and distinct perspectives, highlighting the global connections that shape cultural expression. Shoshana Wayne Gallery presents The Morning After The Fire Swept Through, a solo exhibition by Ashwini Bhat. This body of work continues Bhat’s ongoing, field-based project Assembling California, a deeply personal and ecological mapping of presence, transformation, and ritual.

The exhibition features new bronze and ceramic sculptures, photographs, sound, and text, created in close relationship with the land Bhat inhabits in Northern California. Since relocating from Southern India to the Bay Area during the 2017 Tubbs Fire, the artist has embedded her practice within the rhythms of the land and the aftershocks of catastrophe. The Motherf**cker with the Hat continues at the Odyssey Theatre. The revival of Stephen Adly Guirgis’ popular play brings five powerhouse performers in one show. Matter Studio Gallery hosts an evening of poetry in conjunction with its current exhibitions – Milo Harvey: Transcending Matter and Craig Wcislo: Evolving Matter. Poets include: Charles Reese, Evi Heilbrunn, Sepi Shyne, Ash Nichols, Milo Harvey, Messiaeh. There is a suggested donation, but it will go to supporting the LGBTQIA+ Community.

Milo Harvey utilizes photography to investigate his life as transsexual man in Transcending Matter. Cinecon 61 Classic Film Festival continues today and runs through Labor day. The event will be held at the Writers Guild of America Theater for a weekend filled with timeless movie magic! For more than half a century, Cinephiles have gathered over Labor Day Weekend to celebrate the movies at the annual Cinecon Classic Film Festival. Cinecon is where archivists, authors, collectors, and film fans come together for four days of classic film & TV screenings, celebrity guests, and special programs. Now celebrating its 61st year, this year’s festival will be filled with some of the rarest and unusual material we’ve ever presented.
