Silverlake

In conjunction with its current exhibition FOYER-LA hosts an afternoon of music and community. Simon Klein, one of the artists from fiction/nonfiction will be welcoming sacred harp singing into the exhibition. Moreover, this is happening as a model for catharsis, community engagement, co-creation, and also an embodied experience within the exhibition. Shape note singing, which is the form sacred harp takes, is a style of singing made for participatory learning. As part of fiction/nonfiction, the singing embodies a similar mode of production to works in the show, namely, a desire for collaboration without specific outcome: No two singings are alike. No experience is required and attendance itself is participatory. The practice welcomes those of all singing abilities and knowledge, especially if you think that you cannot sing.

This gathering is a “bring your own chair” event where the gallery asks those who are attending to bring a way to sit. Sacred harp singings usually have a potluck, where guests are welcome to bring food/snacks/and drinks to share with other participants. Event: 1-3:30pm; FOYER-LA, 3920 Fountain Ave., LA 90029; https://www.foyer-la.com

The Wallis presents the Pulitzer Prize winning play English by Sanaz Toossi and directed by Knud Adams. This acclaimed Atlantic Theater Company & Roundabout Theatre Company production runs for a limited engagement of 24 performances at the Wallis’ Bram Goldsmith Theater on April 4 to 26, 2026.

The Wallis Michelle Cann

The play spotlights four Iranian adults preparing for an English language exam in a storefront school near Tehran. Due to  family separations and travel restrictions they are now prompted to learn a new language that may alter their identities. Needless to say, the plot of English is ironically pertinent in 2026 and tells a touching story of young people caught in the crossfire of political assimilation. Runs through April 26, 2026; Performance: 2pm; Admission begins at $53.90; Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts, Bram Goldsmith Theater, 9390 N.
