April 18-23, 2017 marks the launch of The Los Angeles Festival of Photography in tandem with Photo Independent — The International Exposition of Contemporary Photography at The Reef in Los Angeles.
Participate in the LA Festival of Photography, the festival for photographers of all levels. Come participate, learn and take your photography to the next level through Workshops, Lectures, Panel Discussions, and Keynote lectures by Roger Ballen and Charlotte Cotton.
ROGER BALLEN: On Fine Art Photography
CHARLOTTE COTTON: Photography Is Magic – Reframing Photographic Practices
This Keynote lecture draws together current ideas about the use of photography as an invaluable medium in the contemporary art world. From Michele Abeles and Walead Beshty to Daniel Gordon and Matthew Lipps, Cotton will show how artists are consciously reframing photographic practices using mixed media, appropriation and a recalibration of analog processes.
ROGER BALLEN: Fine Art Photography Workshop
In this workshop, you will study with Roger Ballen, one of the most important photographers of the 21st century. This will be a hands on Master Class with shooting sessions, individual assignments, daily group discussion, critiques and editing sessions.
RALPH GIBSON: Photographing the Nude Workshop
Ralph Gibson is one of the most iconic photographers of our time. His unique graphic style is as unmistakable as it is influential. Expand your visual horizons under the guidance of one of the great masters in contemporary photography. Ralph’s high-contrast pictures – usually focusing on one geometric element (the corner of a room) or a single human gesture (the curve of a hand) – form a kind of dream-narrative when gathered together.
KARIN APOLLONIA MÜLLER: Urban and Landscape Photography Workshop
Karin Apollonia Müller is a photographic artist dealing with the notion of “space,” specifically the relationship of the human being to his environment. This workshop will focus on idea and perception. It will present the notion of “space” and “scape” and the tool of photography to document the world surrounding us.

JULIA DEAN: Downtown LA Street Photography Walk & Workshop
This four hour workshop provides you an intimate hands-on experience for learning the skills and practice of producing great street photography. Julia Dean will show and demonstrate her personal approach for seeing, composing and capturing images of the theater of the street. Julia Dean is a photographer, educator, and executive director/founder of the Los Angeles Center of Photography.
