Chris Sharp Gallery presents health house, the first Los Angeles solo exhibition by British artist Ian Kiaer. It will remain on view at the gallery through January 17, 2026

Known for his layered installations, Kiaer investigates Western painting, early utopian architecture, modern literature, and modernism’s ideological legacies. Moreover, he often considers how modern medicine shaped cultural and architectural ideals.

For this exhibition, Kiaer introduces a large cellophane inflatable sculpture, along with paintings, models, and works on paper. Each piece appears as a fragment, and together they establish shifting spatial relationships. Additionally, the works address Richard Neutra’s Health House (1929), designed for Dr. Phillip Lovell, a Los Angeles physician and naturopath. The structure emerged as a key modernist response to new alternative health practices. Furthermore, while modernism embraced hygiene and dust-free interiors, California added water and sun therapies to Europe’s clean-air treatments.

Kiaer avoids direct architectural representation. Instead, he studies selected motifs through abstraction, cropped imagery, painted diagrams, scaled models, and reworked earlier pieces. These elements circulate through the studio, where modern confidence becomes quietly unsettled. Here, stain, dust, and time’s traces register human presence on every surface. Likewise, synthetic and natural materials intersect with pristine and soiled textures. The measured, drawn, felt, and sensed blend together, forming their own visual language. Ultimately, the studio becomes the place where fragility, sensitivity, and bodily awareness assert themselves most clearly.
About Chris Sharp Gallery
Founded in 2021 by writer and curator Chris Sharp—co-founder of Lulu in Mexico City—the gallery supports emerging and mid-career artists in Los Angeles and abroad. Its program highlights practices in which politics, materials, and form remain inseparable. Consequently, the gallery foregrounds work that, put simply, thinks plastically.
