In conjunction with the Getty’s 2024 PST Art initiative Art & Science Collide, the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum hosts WE ARE: Explosion Event for PST ART by world-renowned artist Cai Guo-Qiang on September 15, 2024. 2024 PST ART
A spectacular realization of “Art & Science Collide,” PST ART opens to the public with WE ARE: Explosion Event for PST ART. The newly-commissioned monumental artwork by world-renowned artist Cai Guo-Qiang is presented at the iconic Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum.

Daytime fireworks, a signature form of Cai’s art make up the installation. The artist uses organic, sustainable pigments and dyes rather than traditional pyrotechnics. He has conceived and choreographed this in collaboration with his custom AI model cAI™ (pronounced AI Cai). This work will mark the first event of its kind in US history.
WE ARE is a multi-act performance featuring ten thousand twinkling mini firework shells installed throughout the seating bowl of the Coliseum. These are custom-developed daytime fireworks, and choreographed drones carrying pyrotechnic products. The result is a visual story full of mystery and wonder, igniting the sky with images that showcase AI’s revelation of a “heavenly secret” through the reduction of its dimensionality, followed by those recalling the myth of Prometheus’s theft of fire from the gods and suggesting a present-day parallel in the relationship between humanity and AI.

Southern California’s landmark arts event, PST ART (previously Pacific Standard Time), has returned as of September 2024. The initiative will include 800+ artists, 70+ exhibitions, and 1 mind-blowing theme: Art & Science Collide.
In partnership with museums and institutions across the region, it is one of the largest art events in the world. It explores the intersections of Art and Science, both past and present, with diverse exhibitions. The topics include ancient cosmologies, Indigenous sci-fi, environmental justice, and artificial intelligence, just to name a few.
