Matter Studio hosts a closing art party for Truth Matters by Chukes on Sunday, August 20, 2023 from 2-4pm.
Truth Matters, Chukes
A professional artist for more than 40 years, Chukes works in clay, oil, bronze and mixed media. He has had 30+ solo exhibitions and 60 group shows in galleries. He has also exhibited in museums throughout the United States and abroad. His work is included in many private collections. In addition, he has done several commissions, including works for Archbishop Desmond Tutu.
Chukes has been featured in numerous publications including O, The Oprah Magazine, Ebony, Essence, Valentine New York, and Ciel Paper in London. He also has appeared in films and video documentaries showcasing his art. Dedicated to education in art and in African American history, he has given numerous art talks and lectures, and facilitated workshops.
His formal education includes a BFA in Sculpture and Ceramics from California College of Art and Crafts as well as an MFA in Sculpture from Claremont Graduate University. Additionally, Chukes has just authored a new book titled, Identity Theft: Creations from a Social Conscience.

About Karla Funderburk
Funderburk is a ceramic artist and master carpenter. She earned my MFA from Claremont Graduate University in 1984, with a focus on ceramic sculpture, installation and performance art. In 1991, she started MATTER, a handmade, custom furniture design and manufacturing business. Today she maintains a professional woodshop and ceramic studio, where she design and builds custom woodwork along with ceramic pieces. She also teaches classes in ceramics and woodworking.
