bG Gallery presents a solo exhibition titled "21st Century Angels" featuring sculptures of artist Susan Hannon. Hannon is known for creating sculptures in the shape of human-scale wings made out of discarded vintage Bibles, such as a grade two Braille Bible, an 1865 Civil War-era Bible, and a Torah.Sat-Oct15-2016-bGGallery-cropped-SusanHannon See image: Susan Hannon,  "You Get Me Closer to God, No. 9"  Mixed Media (Vintage Bible, year unknown), 106" x 27" x 8"

Hannon’s work takes emotionally loaded raw materials that were imbued with spiritual and devotional significance and repurposes them for artistic and humanistic ends. “These books were cried on, prayed over, and preached with. They are marinated in so much emotion. I find them in a dilapidated state, about to be thrown out, restore them, and give them new life and new resonance.” In addition to the Bible wing pieces, the retrospective will feature works from 2003 to 2016 in various mediums, including found object sculptures and two-dimensional works on paper.

Gallery 825 presents a group show titled "Countenance Divine," an all-media exploration of contemporary portraiture, juried by Rick Royale, owner of Royale Projects Contemporary Art.

ASat-Oct15-2016-Gallery825-StephanieSydney-SnezanaSaraswaitPetroviclso opening...“The Shrine of Stolen of Stolen Identities,” a multi-media installation created by the collaborative duo “steph ‘n snez,” artists Stephanie Sydney and Snezana Saraswait Petrovic.

The exhibition is dedicated to all the unknown artists who’ve journeyed to Hollywood seeking glamour and success. The Shrine is an immersive, interactive room-sized piece honoring “the diversity and otherness that lie beyond the allure of celebrity culture.” The transient, superficial and impermanent qualities of fame and beauty are explored via mirrored stars, ruby slippers, altars, light boxes, alternative “Oscars,” vintage luggage housing video narratives, and much more.  There is also a 15-minute performance piece scheduled for 6:30PM the evening of the opening, with steph and ‘snez costumed and masked as mixed-gender“Oscarettes” who are the priestesses of this provocative environment.

And finally two more solo shows will be opening - Bibi Davidson's recent series of paintings The Girl in the Red Dress draws the viewer into an alternative, parallel, through-the-looking-glass universe with coherent dream logic. Zeal Harris' "Home Remedies for Driving While Black" is an exhibit of poignant, entertaining, illustrative artworks about the impact of police violence on interpersonal relationships.

Sat-Oct15-2016-TheSalon-BlameItOnMyYouthHead South on La Cienega, to Culver City...

The Salon presents Los Angeles-based Gary Ward in a solo exhibition, ‘The Midnight Drawings’. The series exudes its title as Ward's drawings, ramblings and musings were all done in the quiet of night when daily external noise comes to a halt. Ward committed to doing one drawing per day, around midnight, for an entire year and has amassed a plethora of work for his most extensive exhibit to date.

Though Ward has traditionally worked on paper in a mixed media format of charcoal, oil pastels and graphite, this show will also introduce collaged works presented on canvas.

Downtown features several art events...

Hauser Wirth & Schimmel will present 'Isa Genzken.' I Love Michael Asher, the first Los Angeles solo exhibition for the celebrated German artist.

Sat-Oct15-2016-IsaGenzken-Hauser-Wirth-SchimmelGenzken (b. 1948) was in her late 20s when she visited Michael Asher in California on a travel grant from Dusseldorf Academy, where she had begun teaching in 1977. At this time, Genzken was producing sleek lacquered wood sculptures known as ‘Ellipsoids’ and ‘Hyperbolos.’ This minimalist body of work, which lasted through the early 1980s, engaged with spatial and social aspects of line, mass, scale, color and movement through and around the works.Since their meeting, Genzken’s diverse practice has encompassed sculpture, photography, drawing and painting. Her work borrows from the aesthetics of Minimalism, punk culture and assemblage art to confront the conditions of human experience in contemporary society and the uneasy social climate of capitalism.

In addition to her interior installation of all new works, the exhibition features the outdoor Courtyard installation of ‘Rose III,’ a 26 foot tall sculpture modeled after an actual flower Genzken chose and sent to the foundry. The work simultaneously defies and underscores the fragility and beauty commonly associated with the image of the rose.

Also opening is a comprehensive exhibition of the renowned Dadaists Kurt Schwitters (1887 – 1948) and Hans Arp (1886 – 1966), in the context of works by the Spanish painter, graphic artist and sculptor Joan Miró (1893 – 1983). ‘Schwitters Miró Arp’ was first curated for Hauser & Wirth Zürich in Summer 2016 to celebrate the centenary of the Dada movement in the city of its birth. The new iteration of this group show will include a significant addition of works by Hans Arp – the first large-scale treatment of works by Arp in Los Angeles. The exhibition is curated by art historian Dieter Buchhart, who has organized seminal exhibitions.
